ADAM’S BIO

I am by no means a fitness expert. Most of what I know would be classified as Bro-science learned through trail & error and what I read in the Weider magazines growing up. When I was 16 years old, I watched the Pumping Iron documentary starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. After watching this film and dabbling with weights in my parents’ basement, my entire fitness regimen shifted from martial arts to building my body.

During my teens, I worked out (actually over-trained) at Gold’s Gym in Thornhill. Gold’s was a special place during the late eighties with a true hard core mentality (many professional bodybuilders would come to this gym for magazine photo shoots). During these years, I trained very intesely which later lead to chronic back problems, later forcing me to abandon the gym completely.

After extensive rehab, I reconnected with the gym in my late thirties & adjusted my workout routine accordingly. I have always had trouble keeping weight off around my midsection and in 2012, I decided to give intermittent fasting a try. In my opinion, intermittent fasting is one of the best kept secrets in the fitness industry. It is typically not marketed because there is no money to be made from the food and supplementation industry. Fasting is free and has many health benefits including the reduced risk of diabetes & coronary / artery disease in addition to improving hunger control & overriding the negative effects of a high fat diet.

There are many different variations to intermittent fasting but the one that I have used is the daily sixteen-hour fasting window. With this variation, I only consume food between 12pm and 6pm. I would eat a full lunch & dinner (skipping breakfast) combined with healthy snacking during the eating window & only drink water / coffee during the fasting period. My results after 8 weeks of if were as follows: Dropped my body fat percentage from 18 to 10% with a 12lb decrease in my bodyweight. I also held on to lean muscle while shedding the unwanted fat. Now in my mid-forties & recently separated with more time on my hands, I intend to ramp up my fitness goals moving forward. Give it a try & let me know how it works for you.

  1. When did your athletic career begin? When I was 16 years old, I watched the Pumping Iron documentary starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and immediately started working out in my parents basement. A year later, I joined Gold’s Gym in Thornhill & after one full year of training, was able to add 20 pounds of muscle to my skinny frame.
  2. What adversity have you had to overcome as an athlete?I started to develop back problems in my late twenties that forced me to completely abandon the gym for almost a decade. I went to a back specialist and discovered I had a disc tear at L4-L5 along with some spinal compression. After extensive rehab, I am now back in the gym and have altered my workout program to high reps with moderate weight.
  3. How has working out impacted your life?Oh gosh, everything in your life is better when you are physically fit. You are more mentally focused, energized and confident.
  4. How often do you train and for how long?I train two to three times per week for 45 minutes using high volume reps & moderate weight.
  5. What is your number #1 fitness tip?Bodies are built in the kitchen not in the gym. It doesn’t matter how much time you put into the gym, if you are not eating correctly you will never reach your fitness goals.

Lorne’s Take:

Adam and I are the same age and we met at Gold Gym’s on Doncaster almost 30 years ago.  That gym was old school but always brings back a lot of great memories. Adam has had to overcome some serious back issues to get himself back in great shape. I couldn’t agree more on the role nutrition plays in building an aesthetically pleasing and functionally strong body.

  1. Great story Adam. I can relate I just got back into things after a 15 year layout. It took a few months to get back in the swing of it but I now feel like a never missed a beat.

  2. Those are very impressive results for someone who only does weights 2-3 times. I think it shows the ppwer of having a good diet and being effective with your training.

  3. Thanks for tɦe marvelous posting! І trᥙly enjoyed reading it, yоu willl Ье a grᥱɑt author.

  4. I am 73 years old and it is harder to lose weight at my age once you have put it on. However I did, doing it Adam’s way. I Lost 14 lbs by eating from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. I would also add that I drank 6 to 8 glasses of water in a 24 hours cycle. I found that it filled me up and it doesn’t put any calories on me.
