He then left the corporate world behind to found Flashfood.

How did you come up with the concept of Flashfood?

My sister is a chef and was working at a catering company in downtown Toronto. One day, she gave me a call after her shift and was undoubtedly upset. She had just thrown out $4,000 dollars worth of food! I calmed her down and the next 2-3 weeks, her and I talked about various solutions to having surplus food. I came across the March 2016 Edition of National Geographic and learned that when food gets tossed, it ends up in a landfill and rots under other garbage. This produces methane gas. The statistic that jumped out at me was, “if international food waste were a country, it would be the third leading cause of GHG emissions behind the US & China.” That is when I decided that I had to bring this solution to life!

How does it work?

Our grocery partner brings all of their surplus food that still has 2-3 days of shelf life remaining. They bring it to our Flashfood fridge/rack in store. They upload the food into an iPad at a minimum of 50% mark down. Our users see the deal through their phone, pay via their phone, and pick up their food- same day.

When you buy food through the Flashfood app, you go into the store, grab your item out of our fridge, and check out at the Flashfood checkout aisle.

Can you give some more details on how this is helping the environment?

We’re already diverted hundreds of meals from ending up in a landfill. By diverting perfecting good food from a landfill and into our stomachs, we all contribute to the reduction of GHG produced along the entire value chain of that item.

How much can a typical family of 4 save on their grocery bill?

The average mark down price of food through Flashfood is 54%.

How has the initial feedback been?

We’re partnered with Farm Boy and live in London, ON. The reception has been incredible and we’re excited to bring Flashfood into the Toronto market soon!
